After rupturing his ACL against Collingwood in Round 15 a knee reconstruction saw 2008 cut short for Burton, and he will spend the majority of 2009 preparing for a late season return. Despite the injury Burton still managed to kick 34 goals and top Adelaide’s goal kicking ahead of Simon Goodwin on 33. He was also second behind Scott Stevens at the club for contested marks (18) in 2008.

Burton was originally drafted from SANFL Woodville-West Torrens, where he burst on to the league scene as a high-flying forward in 1998. “I never really thought I was someone who’d make it,” he said. “I didn’t see how it could happen, but everything seemed to change for me in one year.” The Crows drafted him with their first round selection later that year and he made his AFL debut in 1999, played 21 games, finished seventh in the club champion voting and providing several nominations for mark of the year. Injuries restricted Burton to nine games in his second year and 14 games in 2001. But in 2002 Burton, playing as a forward, was the club’s leading goalkicker with 51. Injuries again held him back the next two seasons but he recovered from an early season hamstring strain to play 20 games in 2005. A severe hamstring tear late in 2006 nearly ended his year but he returned for the preliminary final.

Shirley continued his job as Adelaide’s number one tagger and excelled in the role, shutting down some of the competitions elite midfielders. He had 84 tackles, the second highest at the club, and played a standout game in Round 18 against Carlton, nullifying Judd’s influence and kicking two goals of his own. It was his ability to strengthen the offensive side of his game that contributed to one of his best years at the club. He finished 2008 with 128 kicks and 174 handballs.

From Woodville-West Torrens, Shirley was first drafted in the 1999 national draft and made his AFL debut in 2000.
